Wheat is a domesticated grass from the Levant that is cultivated worldwide. Globally, wheat is an important human food, its production being second only to maize among the cereal crops; rice ranks third.

Tarwe is een van de voornaamste granen waar de mensheid zich mee voedt, naast rijst en maïs. Het staat met maïs op een gedeelde eerste plaats. In Nederland werd in 2005 116.000 ha wintertarwe en ruim 20.600 ha zomertarwe geteeld.
